I am only a student here on this historical army base. When growing up I never thought I would be attending the new Cal State University here on the land, which was Fort Ord. My Uncle reminisced about his months, stationed here before being dispatched to Vietnam. When arriving for my first days of school I moved into the old officer housing, now full of eager students. My first day of school here I was handed a packet of papers to fill out and a large poster which I curiously opened. Written across the top “Do not Touch” underneath pictures of all of the possible mines and bombs we could possibly come across. Ha, I bet this is the only school that warns students of potential dismemberment. It is strange, I often wonder about the thousands of men and women who passed through those abandoned buildings now boarded up and crackling from the cold Monterey weather. Many times I have seen people who spent there past here searching with their families for their old dwellings out here. Driving through the mazes of silent streets and grassy walkways.
Reading the entries in the web site gives the younger generations and the people who stumble across this mysterious a sense of understanding. Thank You Rose Stead

I worked in the Division Ammunition Office 90-93, and then was in the 707th(?) Transportation Company. I left Sept 93 and went to Germany. Ft Ord was my first duty station, and I have fond memories of the soldiers and officers I served with while I was there.
Rhonda Doyle doyler@rocketmail.com
I would like to locate Marion Venoy who was a good friend. At the time (93), she was seeing Robert Williams who had worked with me at the Division Ammo Office. I have lost contact with them and with Sylvester Carter who retired as MSG and moved to Florida, MAJ Paul R. Plemmons, SSG Bobby J. Seawright, CW3 Harvey White, and a good friend who traveled to Germany at the same time I did....Jacquelyn M. Brown from Louisianna. Any information on these would be appreciated. E-mail me at doyler@rocketmail.com

After a 44 year absence I stood in my childhood home at 211 Leinbach Ave. on Wednesday, January 17, 2001. Started school at Fort Ord Elementary School. Lived there 3 years 1955-1957. My Dad was 1Sgt. Travis B. Cox in a basic training company and also Headquarters Company 34th Engineer Group. My brothers were Travis Cox Jr. and Kenny Cox. My little girlfriend across the street was Terry Rundell, daughter of Captain Rundell. I have lots of pictures. Very sad to see Fort Ord closed and evrything boarded up.

I was stationed at "Planet Ord" from Jan 80 to Sep 82. My unit was Trp D, 2/10th Air Cavalry Squadron. I could not wait to leave Ft. Ord when I PCS'd to another duty station. As I look back I realize just how special Ord really was. This web site is a great idea. Sure wish I could time-travel back and do it all over again.

Your site has brought back many a memory. August, 1964, Basic Training. I still remember almost all of it. Company was C-1-4 in the old barracks during the meningitis breakout and confinement to the Company area. The long brisk walks, the nice little picnic hikes and the loud, loud, loud firing ranges. Exercise and chastisement. Harrassment and mental abuse, Ah! for the good old days. I now live just 50-60 miles away in San Jose and have been to the old girl once and am planning another trip. Any reunions in the offing? Would like to attend one. Thanks for the memories. Nick

1969-71. I was OJT HQ, Finance(TDY) for 8 weeks or so, then transfered 54th MP, duty with Bldg 4953 - Mailroom for the rest of my tour, says it all.
Thanks for the pictures of WWII barracks. Does it bring back memories of me leaping for the door frame before I realized it was an earthquake, not the troops upstairs overturning a locker? Oh yeah.
Someplace I have a picture of a fog covered entrance to Bldg 4953.

My husband was stationed at Ft Ord from 1992-93. This was his very first duty station. As a military spouse I loved living on this post and was saddened that we had to leave due to it's closure. I really miss it and hope that something there is preserved for future public visits and viewing.

I took basis training at Fort Ord in 1956. After basic, I was assigned to the Red Diamond 5th Div. Band as a trombone player. What a Blast for a young guy. Met some great people while at Fort Ord and made some grand memories. After Fort Ord, was shipped to the 279th Army Band in Portiers, France. It is sad to see the old base in such a sorrowful state, but a lot of old army ghosts are still around. Spc 4 Jack L Ellis

This is where I grew up while my dad was in the army and it is awful to see what it has been brought down to. Atleast the government is slowly but surely making something good out of it again. It will always be my home no matter its condition.

1987-1990 These were the best of times, these were the worst of times. 3d Platoon, A Co, 5/21 Inf. The best platoon in the best company in the best battalion in the 7ID until we were completely demoralized by a change of command. It sure sucked when we went from being "War Eagles" to the "Duty" battalion. I was amazed to see, and have never forgotten, what two incompetent "commanders" (not leaders) can do to the hearts and souls of other human beings. My daughter recently visited Fort Ord and returned with photos of the delapidated facilities that were home to many fine soldiers and their families. That state of decay is analagous to the decay brought to A Co and 5/21 Inf by the two "commanders" (company and battalion) I refer to above. God bless the many who completed the mission inspite of the incomptent commdanders we endured at these levels. Wherever you are, I hope you are well and propsering. If you are in leadership remember, "Take care of the men and the men will take care of the mission." Elgar, Watley, drop me a line.

I was at Fort Ord from 1988 until September of 1991. I was a medic with HHC 5/21 Infantry. I was attached to Bravo Company 5/21 Infantry. Was deployed to Pananma the week before Christmas in 1989. It turned the boys into men. Would like to have contact with anyone (Especially any of our medics) who served with 5/21 during that period. Really miss the parties at Doc Spradlin's house. Anyone who was there will know what I mean. Hated it while I was there but kind of miss it since it is gone. Now assigned as a medic with the Michigan National Guard. What a joke.

Was stationed at the "Planet" from 1988-1992 was with 761st CML Co. we were in the old WWII barracks overlooking the beach ranges. I have many great memories of Ord. Went to the Gulf War with 761st, my daughter was born at Silas B., had many great friendships start. It was the greatest duty assignment I ever had. I remember the many two-three week vactaions to Hunter-Liggett and Camp Bob. If anyone has pictures they want to share, e-mail me and I will trade what I have with you. Take care all.

I went through Basic and AIT at Ft. Ord. It was in Jan. 1963 and I was in C Company, 8th BG, 3rd Brigade. Then to Truck Driver's school. I was a basic recruit with D23 during june july aug of 1970. I will never forget my best friend there at the time, Arcenio Chavez from Big Springs,TX. Sadly in the 31 years that have gone by i lost all photos from that era. It seems to me that there would be photographic records from all graduating BCT classes that have passed through the grounds of Fort Ord. Photographs from our youth become more priceless as we grow older.
James Schultze
It is so sad to see this web site and then look at what Fort Ord is now. It was once a symbol of our great country's might. It is really depressing to drive down past the old barracks and what not and see over grown plants and boarded up windows where thousands used to live and train to protect the United States.
John Dennis Johnd10496@aol.com
I was NCOIC, RATT Section, HHB, 5/15FA, 84-88. SFC Anulao was Plt Sgt. Cpt Pierce was the BC. LTC Gaddis & Miller were the Bn Cdr's. Went with Alfa 1/8FA to Honduras in '85. Went back last fall, DivArty barracks are colored purple and pink for the college dorm students. It is a waste of prime property nowadays, lots of garbage flying around, civilians don't take care of the place. But, the half fog and half sun light is still there!

I feel very priviledged to have had the opportunity to experience life on Fort Ord. My husband was stationed there 86-89 and I arrived there at age 18 right after my high school graduation. Coming from the mountains of east Tennessee this was a huge culture shock for us but at the same time we welcomed the change. I thought I was flying into paridise the day I arrived at Monterey airport. This base has so many special and rare memories for us and hearing that it would be closing was heartbreaking. I would love to go back...but seeing it in another perspective would not be the same. Thank you so much for keeping these memories alive for those of us that were fortunate enough to experience "Planet Ord". Amy Leinart (husband Sgt. Darryl Leinart c-co 1/123rd aviation)
Victor Showers / V_Showers@hotmail.com
I was stationed at the "Planet" from 1982 to 1987 when I was medically retired from the Army, I was there before and all the way through the transition to "Light Fighter", as a member of the 13th Engineer(Sapper)Battalion, HHC, Medical Section (AID Station), both as a field medic and even as the NCOIC for a short time. both of my daughters were born at Silas B. Hayes and near the end of my duty there I was a patient there myself (after having worked in the wards and ER). I would like to hear from any ex-sappers, or anyone that may remember me from days gone by. Victor Showers. SGT, USArmy (ret) - V_Showers@hotmail.com

Had Basic and AIT at Ft. Ord in 1972, then back to Indiana National Guard until 1977. I loved the place especially The Wharf and Pebble Beach. The long runs/marching in the sand were tough, but I wish I was still in the shape I was back then! Thanks Drill Sgt. Muldanado for all the hard work. Any of the 10-15 guys from Elkhart, IN who went together for basic in '72, e-mail me, I'd like to talk again.

Charles Holder, NBC NCO A 2/62 ADA 1985 to 1987
I was stationed at Fort Ord as the NBC NCO for a few years until I was arrested for stealing night vision gogles. I was sent to trial & found guilty. I was almost sent to prision but because my wife & daughter cried their eyes out on the stand, the all military jury felt guilty & let me off easy. I knew I took them and so did they. I made up this silly story about how I found them while joging on the beach. I tried to scratch off the serial no. but there was a second micro serial no. on the lens. I was in shock when the matched those gogles with the missing ones from our company. I was dishonorably discharged and reduced to an E-1. How embarassing!! I deserved it though. My life is a little better now. I am married with 6 children, no job right now but I am shooting for an opening that came up at Domino's Pizza as a delivery guy. I love talking and meeting with different people. I love Planet Ord!! Too bad my military career ended like it did!! I want to thank Col. Brown over in JAG for getting me off the hook. Your one great Lawyer!!! Also to First Sgt. Phillips for screaming so loud in my ear that you unblocked all that wax build up!! You used to make me do push ups at the beach & make me eat a few gulps of that gritty white beach sand. I can still hear you laughing so hard you almost broke a rib!! Also to Capt. Doyle, you no good son of a bitch. During the trial you said I was as guilty as sin. You almost sent me up the river. If you were standing next to me right now I would bop you in the nose so hard!!! I always thought you were gay & wanted me.......PVT HOLDER & Maria Holder (wife)

The days were long and the nights were cool. I was stationed at Ord for 7 years. From there I went to Polk where life ends. I never got promoted past Corp. I didn't matter, I never knew what the hell I was doing. I remember that day we went to pratice throwing gernades. I was the dope that threw the pin & kept my gernade in my teeth!! Boy, people were scattering like I was blowing SBD farts. What wacko's. I picked up a chick once on Cannery Row, we went to the Aquarium & I fell into the whale tank.....I still think this girl threw me in. They had to pull me out with a giant fish hook. I was soaking wet & the whole place was laughing at me. I am still mentally scarred from this sick event in my life. Thanks to this horrible day I was able to apply for Military Disability because I got 32 stitches on my head from banging into the pool filter. Now I am retired at the age of 38 making $2,800.00 per month doing close to nothing. I think it was all worth it that day!!! By the way, I never saw that chick again....She acted like she didn't even know me. Them were the days!!!!!!!

This site is so cool!! I love the photo's. Do you have any pictures of the day our platoon did a nude 2 mile road march across the beaches of Monterey?? I know the news was there that day. I was with CDEC at Hunter Liggett from early '73 - Spring of '75. My last 6 months before ETS I was sent north to Ft. Ord. There I was with the 14th Engr.BN. Liggett was a weird place ... saw lots of pretty strange things going on there. Though I'm a Pennsylvania boy, I neve went home. Still living in Calif. Went by Ft. Ord not too long ago. It's sad to see the place rotting like it is ... so many memories. Both Liggett and Ord left impacts on me that will never go away. And that's ok! If anyone from Engr. Co, CDEC remembers me, how about writing?!?! Actually, if you were at HLMR in the early 70's, feel free to write. It was a unique time there, and we where a strange lot. Blessings to ya'!

Mr. Swann, I cannot begin to express the nostalgia and profound memories you have uncovered in the back of my mind. I was stationed at Fort Ord from 11/82 to 11/84. I was in Bravo Company 4th and the 9th. How I miss those days. The weekly brawls at the Foxhole Club.My friends Jay Hensley,Mark Meechum, Frank Gilfilin,Victor Lee, Mike Surbrug, Alex Martin,Kelly Olsen, Eddie Derr, Jerome Russell Marvin Watson,Gary Scoolfield. Oh how I would love to know how you guys are. I hope you are all happy and healthy.Remember those days in Santa Cruz and Carmel. Or how about our first initiation to Solidad Street in Salinas(LOL)Remember tight Terry with the spandex 1 peice with the pubes hangin'out. Ha Ha or cruisin the strip in Salinas lookin' for honeys and gettin' swooped by the locals. How about the morning run to mudhen lake and back and 1st Sargent Wade cryin' the blues all the time.Remember Ice plant detail for all us screwups.Or dead cat detail(LOL).Alex remeber that trip to Sanfrancisco to see the scorps and we couldn't get a ticket and you gave us a tour and eventually got so drunk you ran the toll on the Golden Gate(both ways). And we wrecked and you got arrested for DUI.Surb and I had to pull a runner on that taxi driver(LOL).Mr. Swann you got my memory bank workin' in overdrive. Guys if you ever read this, e-mail please.I love you guys. Almost 20 years and It still seems like yesterday. Peace Y'all your friend John Hanes from Pa. Go Penn State :)

I had AIT at Fort Ord from March through May of 1967. Came directly there from Basic at Ft. Lewis - seemed like heaven after all that Washington State rain & cold. Went on to Ft. Irwin, then RVN with the 5/22 Artillery. I remember the dunes, the shore & Stilwell Hall, and that beautiful view of the sea that you could get from almost anywhere on the post. What a great feeling it is to be able to say that I served there for a while, with some of the greatest guys the Army has ever seen.

Looking for Sargent Burns, Sargent Richter(Both DI's) and a certain Captain Lang, the CO who were in my BCT company D-2-1 back in first part of January 1969'. They wouldn't let me go on sick call when I got blood poisoning and had a 105 degree temperature & just about died in that old hospital that two guys had to sneak me into...Recall getting bounced around by both DI's and the Captain Lang was pretty free with his fist once too when I got released after over 3 months in the hospital...Wonder where they are now? BE great to talk over old fun times with the those guys you know?

I was fortunate enough to be stationed at Fort Ord from 1948 to 1950 as CO of Co G, 12 th Infantry, 4th Division. Lived at 5B Sherman Circle, Ord Village, which I presume is long gone. My first son was born at Fort Ord. I have very fond memories of the post and surrounding area and hated to see it join the inactive list, but glad to see the developers haven't got their hands on it

WAS AT FORT ORD DURING 1968 and 1969:
Was drafted and sent to Ord for basic from Jan 30,1968-April 5,1968. Was on THE HILL at B-3-1 ("We're the best...to hell with the rest..RAH!" was our company battle cry). B-3-1 was the very last barracks at the top of The Hill on the right (west) side. Took us up to The Hill from the old lower fort aboard cattle trucks with about 75 men in each. Sgt.Slate was the head DJ--always wore sunglasses day and night. 1st Lt. Hauser was the CO and Master Sgt. Overstreet was the Top Sgt.
After that, went to Ft. Lewis, Washington for AIT from April 6-June 10,1968 then, after 2 weeks leave, on to Ft. Benning, Georgia where I became an "Instant NCO" as we were called. Was there at the Harmony Church area of Benning from June 25 til Sept 25,1968.
After a week leave, I came back to Ft.Ord from October 1-Dec 1,1968 as a drill instructor as part of my NCO training. For AIT troops in the old lower fort barracks area.
The day after Christmas, I reported to the Seattle area for a flight at midnight "across the pond" to Camron Bay, Vietnam. Where I lasted until Jan 30, 1969 before I was wouunded while on a 9th Division patrol out of Dong Tam in the Delta. Was flown to base---then to Saigon---then to Kishine Barracks in Tokyo, Japan for 90 days and then HOME to THE WORLD! And---you guessed it--I ended back at good old Fort Ord in the hospital there about May 1968. Took months to recover and then was attached to the eye clinic up on the south road that ran past The Hill where I worked. Major Ward was the I/C of the clinic. Great duty. Ended up getting a 5 month "early-out" in Sept 1969.
I think it is a damn shame that Ft. Ord was not COMPLETELY preserved as a historical site and opened to toursim and/or even re-used as needed. A GREAT place. LOTS of soul!
Anyone know where I can find even more photographs in detail of Fort Ord. Inside Stillwell Hall, inside the barracks old and new, the old hospital, the nco club, bowling alley, the obstacle courses, rifle ranges, running trails (in the sand UP HILL!), etc.
Best to all.
MC

Just went back through the guest book and read my old entry that was made October of 98. I visit this site often to see if there are any new entries by some of the people that I was stationed with. The time frame would be 81-84 with the 571st MP Co. I love to read the entries. It has made me decide to make a trip back to the place that I hold dear to my heart since it was my only duty station due to a perm. profile. I remember going to a little bar that was called Poor Boys. They served beer and wine only and lunch during the day. At night it would turn into a great little bar to shoot pool or chat and eat salted peanuts and throw the shells on the floor. There was one other place that I liked to go and it was called the Deep Six. My favorite spot was out along Hwy 1 going towards Big Sur. Those cliffs were something else. Would love to hear from anyone that remebers any of these places. So long for now until I get another thought or I come back from the "PLANET".
